Later, TVJ or Tito (Sotto), Vic (Sotto) and Joey (de Leon) announced what truly happened. Apparently, the new management of Tape Inc prevented them from airing live. On the same day, the three veteran hosts announced that they were disengaging themselves from Tape, Inc. The other hosts – Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Allan K, Ryan Agoncillo, Paolo Ballesteros, Maine Mendoza, and Ryzza Mae Dizon – followed suit.

Here's a clip about that announcement.

The Surprise That Eat Bulaga Made

True to its name "Eat Bulaga" made a surprise on 31 May 2023. The longest noontime show in the Philippines surprised the nation with an unexpected end. The word bulaga is synonymous to surprise in English.

Recently, Eat Bulaga was enveloped with "rumors" that the show was ending, rebranding, hosts being replaced, and moving out to another network. Here's a clip about that "rumor" from Tape's point of view.

A day or so after, Sen Tito Sotto responded through Nelson Canlas's Updated via YouTube.

What Happens Next

What now? Will Eat Bulaga continue to air? If yes, with whom? What about its name? Who owns Eat Bulaga?

In the Name of Delicadeza

Who will be willing to host Eat Bulaga? Surely, anyone from the entertainment industry who has respect and honor, or friends with the hosts of Eat Bulaga will never dare accept any engagement from Tape Inc to host or be part of the show. Only the ones, who are complete strangers or known nemesis to the said hosts or show will be willing to take part in the said noontime show.

Who Will Watch the "Rebranded" Eat Bulaga?

If you are loyal to Eat Bulaga or sympathetic with the hosts of the said show, will you continue to watch Eat Bulaga? The success of the rebranded Eat Bulaga depends on fans and followers. Will it capture the same audience?

If TVJ and the other hosts will simultaneously air a similar show as soon as possible via a different channel and other streaming platforms, most likely Eat Bulaga's established audience niche will remain loyal to them. The original Eat Bulaga will be a threat to the rebranded Eat Bulaga.

Who Owns Eat Bulaga?

The words eat, bulaga and dabarkads cannot be "copyrighted" because these are very common words; just like apple or windows. Only the trademark made from these words can be "copyrighted". TVJ or anybody else can use any of these words legally. Thus, TVJ's Eat Bulaga or Dabarkads are definitely valid program names that can be used legally.

In the first place, common and generally accepted words and names cannot be copyrighted. Copyright is used only for original works such as music, artworks, books, publications, designs, among others. Logo images and logo names can be trademarked but not copyrighted.

Montessori, a name of a physician who developed a theory of education, is being used by many a school. The school that first used Montessori as part of its school name was not able to make exclusive claim to the name for the reason that Montessori is a method of education that any organization can practice.

Likewise, the word apple is not exclusive to Apple Computers Inc. Apple, the company, can only claim exclusive rights to its logo and trademarks, but not to the word apple.

Therefore, Tape Inc can continue using Eat Bulaga as the name of its show; but this does not prevent anybody from using the words eat, bulaga and dabarkads. On the other hand, out of delicadeza, Tape Inc may opt not to use the words eat bulaga. For ethical reasons, I wish they should not.

Tape Inc used to have a talent show called Diz Iz It hosted by Allan K airing just before Eat Bulaga. Its common tagline was it's showtime, which later became the name of Eat Bulaga's rival show. DZBB used to have short injects called Bantay Bata, which ABS-CBN later branded as its own.

Social Media Contents

Who has the right to contents published on various social media platforms: Tape Inc or TVJ?

Tape Inc produced the show, so, it has exclusive rights to all its contents related to what it solely produced. However, TVJ and other personalities have all the rights to prevent Tape Inc to publish any portion of whatever Tape Inc produced that show their faces.

Whomever the social media account is registered to, he or she owns that social media account unless he or she represented Tape Inc when he or she opened the account. Otherwise, he or she should remove all contents related to whatever Tape Inc produced. On the other hand, if Tape Inc claims ownership to these accounts, and TVJ and other personalities prohibited the company from publishing their faces, Tape Inc should oblige unless both parties agreed in writing to anything otherwise. On the other hand further, stipulation in writing can lose its binding if specifically dated and stated.

Who has rights to Disney films? Disney. It's as easy as that. Tape Inc produced the shows Eat Bulaga, so the right to these is theirs. But to the name? It's a matter of ethics.

Moral of the Story

Always protect what your mind birthed to. Had TVJ officially trademarked the name Eat Bulaga (as a logo name, or a logo image with the words eat bulaga), ethically no one will dare use the words "eat bulaga" commercially for the reason that these words are already encrypted in its trademark. However, the words remain public domain. Only the trademark is exclusive.

What I am writing here is addressed to the priests, bishops, archbishops, cardinals and nuns of the Catholic Church, whether religious or diocesan.

To Forgive and To Love

You must have heard or read the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:23-35. If you are a priest, a nun, a pastor or a priest of higher position such as a bishop, I am sure that you know about this parable. For that reason, I would no longer quote Matthew's gospel here. Instead, I am going to write about The Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 2:5–11.

Before reading the passage, if you are a religious leader of the Catholic Church in the Philippines, I want you to pause for a little while and think why I am addressing this post to you all. Reflect on the lines that I have emphasized.

Forgiveness for the Offender 2 Cor 2:5–11

But if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but to some extent — not to exaggerate it — to all of you. This punishment by the majority is enough for such a person; so now instead you should forgive and console him so that he may not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. I wrote for this reason: to test you and to know whether you are obedient in everything. Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ. And we do this so that we may not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

Pope John Paul II Forgives His Assassin

On 13 May 1981, Mehmet Ali shot and wounded Pope John Paul II. While in the hospital recuperating, the Pope expressed his forgiveness to his perpetrator four days after the attempted assassination. The Pope even requested the Italian president then, Carlo Ciampi, to pardon Mehmet which the good president granted. The Pope even later called his failed assassin brother and asked people to pray for him. Two years after, Pope John Paul II visited Mehmet in prison and talked privately. The Pontiff had established friendship with Mehmet and had even met with Mehmet's family years after.

The Saint Pope John Paul II is an excellent example of a Christian who forgives from his heart and soul.

I wonder if every priest and nun or sisters follow the saint's example. Let's find out.

The Church and the Marcoses

You often hear [some] priests, bishops and nuns talked on every platform about the Marcoses as the unforgivable thieves. They always refer to the Marcoses's ill-gotten wealth during the martial law. Ferdinand Marcos has been dead for 33 years (1989-2022). Martial Law ended in 1981. So, it has been more than four decades since the martial law ended and five decades since it began.

If the saintly pope John Paul II was able to forgive the man who tried to kill him in four days, how come the Catholic church of the Philippines could not forgive Ferdinand Marcos? It has been 5 decades.

The priests, bishops and nuns of the catholic church preach about forgiveness and the Sacrament of Reconciliation; yet they could not forgive a man who has been dead for 40 years. Worse, they often refer to the Marcoses, which means that they have labeled as thieves even the innocent grandchildren and great grand children of Ferdinand Marcos. Is that fair and right that the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren inherit the crimes and sins of their parents or grandparents?

Ferdinand's crime is not about you personally; in fact, some of you may have not been born yet during the martial law. But you talk as if the Marcoses had stolen from you personally. You are not a party to his crime; if you are, go ahead, bring the dead Ferdinand to court.

If you could not be merciful, at least, do not persecute every member of the Marcos kin and use your pulpit to brainwash each catholic to parallel their minds to what you believe in hatred.

Nuns and sisters: If a young girl entered your convent to become a postulant, but she later confessed that she was a daughter of a prostitute, what would you do to her?

Priests, bishops and the like: How would you treat a fellow priest whom you later found out that his father was in prison for murder?

Be an example of what you preach. If you want every Christian and non-Christian to value the sacrament that you preach, be an example rather than being a hypocrite.

Message from the Blessed Mother

In one of her messages in Medjugorje, the Blessed Mother said, "... a time is coming when almost every Catholic will be ashamed of the words of Jesus. She said very few Catholics will remain faithful, very few. And those who do will be persecuted terribly by other Catholics...."

Do not let this happen. If you continue to be what you are today, the Blessed Mother's warning might take place. When it does, it will be all your fault for preaching mercilessness rather than forgiveness; division rather than solidarity; hatred and anger rather than love.

St Paul Knows Better Than You Do

Remember what St Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians:

Forgive and console the one who has wronged you;

Reaffirm your love by doing more than to forgive;

Be obedient because you have to set an example for what you preach;

Do all these: forgive, love and obey; otherwise, the one behind your words, mind, and heart is Satan.

Think about the words of St Paul who knows better than what you preach. Each time you speak ill with anger and hatred against the Marcoses and their families, it is not you who speaks but Satan.

Maybe today, when you stand in that pulpit again, speak with compassion so that you may know the difference between the words that come from evil and the Word of God.

My Prayer

If you are going to judge me that who am I to talk about this sacrament of forgiveness, I am just nobody. What I only know is that I have learned to truly forgive.

If this post has hurt you in any way, it is because the truth hurts. Sana tablan kayo.

Despite the vaccinations, why is there a surge? Despite the current lockdown, COVID cases more than doubled in 11 days (66,895 active cases before the lockdown on 5 August; 106,672 cases on 16 August).

I think, the lockdown will only delay transmission of the virus. Once the people start to roam again the cities and other places, there goes the dreadful COVID again. Perhaps, even for just a week, IATF could have implemented ALL-STAY-HOME-NO-ONE-GOES-OUT policy. In case of emergency, call an emergency hotline. Rescue and medical teams pick up the patient.

The problem is: do we have a hotline? How many ambulances do we have? Well, that should not be a problem. Everything can be planned.

Circuit Breaker: Total Lockdown

Here's an actual scenario.

A friend visited my sister on her birthday. She stopped her car in front of the house. Without getting off, she rolled down her window and had a quick chat with my sister. My sister handed her some iced tea, then she drove off. It all happened in seconds; not even a minute.

Just after finishing her iced tea, her throat started to itch. The next day, my sister's friend felt unwell. She was swabbed; she was positive. All in her family, kids included, were infected. Only one toddler was spared.

As a consequence, my sister quarantined herself while all of us others tried to distance from her. Nevertheless, you can't imagine the anxiety creeping in our heads.

Now, imagine if multiple similar scenarios happened on that day, how many people could have been infected?

Hypothetical Scenario

What if a total lockdown was implemented instead even for just a week? What could have been a scenario? Let's hypothetically imagine.

If there was a total lockdown, the actual scenario that I just stated would have not happened. No friend visited my sister. None in her family could have been infected.

See my point there? A total absolute lockdown could have prevented a surge.

Yes, it is possible that even before the lockdown, more than a few could have been already infected. But, at least, with a total lockdown, they could have been prevented from spreading the virus.

Have you heard of a strawberry lockdown?

I'll write about it tomorrow.

amikvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06279256231045601365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401919218067431046.post-15909063895074025312020-04-17T01:40:00.000+08:002020-04-17T01:40:35.394+08:00Which App and Devices Broadcast Live Streams With Shorter Delays? How real is real time when live streaming a TV broadcast?

While my sister and I were watching the same program on TV, I could hear from my room that the audio coming from the living room and my room were not synchronized. I could hear the audio of my TV ahead from that in the living room. So, I already know for a fact that a TV broadcast via cable has seconds delay compared to watching a program via air antenna (terrestrial).

Cable TV Broadcast vs Live Streaming on the Net

Outside my room, my sisters were watching GMA News on TV; while I was watching the same program via live streaming on my iPhone. I could clearly hear that the audio from the TV was ahead from that of my iPhone.

YouTube App vs Facebook App

On iPhone, if live streaming via YouTube app, there was a delay of 20s10 (seconds). With Facebook app, the delay was only 10s19 (seconds). Therefore, that makes live streaming on Facebook app nearer to real time compared to live streaming on YouTube app.

Facebook Mobile App vs Facebook on Browser

I also measured the delay between live streaming on Facebook on mobile vs Facebook on PC. On mobile, the live streaming was ahead by 14s45 (seconds) than on browser.

Devices used:

Samsung smart TV broadcasting via Destiny Cable

iPhone 6s iOS 12.3.1

MSI GT780 with Windows 7 Ultimate

MacBook Pro (soon)

Android (soon)

Day 32

The 30-day quarantine was extended to until 30 April 2020. On this day, there were 1.95 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 of which 126,000 had died - a mortality rate of 6.45%.

Day 21

Background

What is like being locked down inside a community quarantine? It's first for me, and perhaps to everyone else. How would one see life then – seriously? Hopefully? Angrily?

When dengue epidemic hit the Philippines in 2019, it caused more than 46,000 cases with 622 deaths in 7 months. No town or city was quarantined for the reason that dengue was not communicable from human to human.

In the case of COVID-19, there are only 307 cases as of this writing, yet the whole Luzon and parts of Visayas and Mindanao are under quarantine. With dengue, it takes one mosquito bite to get sick. With COVID-19, infection is exponential.

In 1906, Mary Mallon did not know, that she was a carrier of typhoid bacteria. Wherever she cooked, people near her would develop typhoid fever. She had no symptoms, thus she never believed that she was infected. To stop her from infecting people, she was quarantined for 3 years, then another for 23 years until her death in 1938.

COVID-19 can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. For that reason, the person next to you can be a carrier even if he or she is not showing any symptoms. Worse, he or she can leave traces of the coronavirus wherever he or she goes.

Being a new type of virus, there is no cure yet to kill COVID-19. Thus, the only way to stop the further spread of this coronavirus is to contain the people inside a quarantine.

As of 21 March, there are 266,073 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease from 180 countries; 11,184 of the patients had died. (Ref: WHO)

Before the Quarantine

In his speech, WHO Director-General said that "COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic."

Not knowing what could happen next, the thought of pandemic was scary. Then, it happened.

On the 12th, Pres Duterte placed Metro Manila under community quarantine for 30 days beginning 15 March.

On the 13th, my neighborhood was quiet. It felt like Black Saturday. Makati recorded 12 cases diagnosed with COVID-19 plus 6 patients confined at the Makati Medical Center.

On 14 March, Philippines recorded 98 cases of patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

I was anxious how it could be like to be community-quarantined. I felt is first effect when my parish announced that there'd be no celebration of Mass on Sundays at the church. Instead, parishioners could watch it via live streaming on Facebook.

The night before the quarantine, I heard Mass online.

Day 1 (March 15)

Sunday. I woke up early to hear Mass once again via live streaming. There were times I felt lazy going to Mass; but today, I hungered for it. It felt like war as if to express one's faith is prohibited, therefore, must be done in secret.

Lent in the Philippines is a big observance. This year, on the 400th year of our parish church, the old tradition that we look forward to every Lent and Holy Week will not be observed.

On this day, confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose to 140 with 12 recorded deaths.

Day 2 (March 16)

DOH reported first case of Filipino having recovered from COVID-19. The government announced that the entire Luzon, not just Metro Manila, would be under quarantine.

Day 3 (March 17)

The entire Philippines is now under a state of calamity for 6 months per presidential proclamation 929.

Today, out of 142 COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, 4 had recovered. Sadly, two died today, and 45 new cases were reported bringing COVID-19 cases to 187.

Paranoia is not good. Sometimes, without your intention, you could hurt someone's feelings.

PAG-IBIG Fund requested my nephew to continue reporting for work, making him vulnerable to the virus. With that, I forbid him to stop going to our house. There are 4 elderly at home; one of them is seriously ill. Perhaps, he couldn't see the risk so I had to be blunt to make him realize the situation. Saying so made me feel uncomfortable. My words, however, were not in vain because the President tonight totally forbid everyone in Luzon to going to work.

Under the enhanced community quarantine, the president declared that there should be no work at all both in the private and government sectors, exempting the frontliners and those whose work are related to food and medicine. Any one who violates the quarantine can be arrested.

Indeed, it feels like martial law except that your fear roots from a pandemic.

Day 4 (March 18)

Being at home under community quarantine makes you feel you're under a house arrest. COVID-19 is a communist. You're free, yet you are not allowed to do things you could normally do. You cannot just go anywhere. The only good excuse to going out is to buy food and you have to walk alone.

At night, the curfew makes the evening quiet and peaceful. No loud videokes; no noisy groups feasting on liquor in the streets; no fast noisy string of vehicles.

DOH reported a total of 202 COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths, 7 recoveries. GMA News announced that it was signing off. Now what?

Day 5 (March 19)

It is the feast of St Joseph, patron of peaceful deaths. I opened my Twitter and read 475 COVID-19 deaths in Italy. I don't know what to pray today. There are no tears in my eyes, but the sadness is there. I'd like to think and feel positive but the anxiety is strong as to what could become of us in the next few days.

On a positive side, WHO says to avoid taking ibuprofen to ease COVID-19 symptoms.

Day 6 (March 20)

Day 7 (March 21)

A video about the current situation in Italy just disturbed me. I hope and I pray that this degree of situation does not reach our situation here in the Philippines.

Day 8 (March 22)

Sunday. Being quarantined could be tiring. In a way, seeing the same thing everyday, psychologically, could be tiring. Boredom starts to set in no matter how you keep yourself busy.

Woke up late because I was very tired. After hearing Mass online, i felt I needed something to boost my mind. Good thing, GMA and UST came up with an online no-contact live entertainment on Facebook tagged #BuongPusoParaSaPilipino.

To further boost my system, I listened to Greatest Hits of the 60s.

A Message That Moved The Nation

After reading Dr Greg Macasaet's farewell message, I had no words to describe how I felt for him and the rest of medical frontliners. Here I quote, Bishop David's prayer request and message.

A message from Bishop Pablo Virgilio David on the death of Dr. Greg Macasaet :
“CALLING FOR A WHOLE WEB OF PRAYER WARRIORS
Yesterday, I received a text message from a friend of the family of Dr. Greg Macasaet, an anesthesiologist and a dedicated frontliner in the fight against COVID19. Apparently, as they attended to patients in the emergency room of a hospital, Dr. Greg and his wife (who is also an anesthesiologist) both got infected by the virus they were fighting. They submitted themselves to a COVID19 testing and both came out positive. But between the two of them, Dr. Greg appeared to have been more severely affected by the disease. Soon he had to be put in the ICU because he developed a pneumonia and was beginning to have a shortness of breath.
Dr. Greg continued to communicate with his family and friends using his cellphone, making calls and text messages. When he started to realize how serious his condition was, he sent the following text message yesterday:

“Good evening, my beloved brethren ! The turn of events is just no longer going in my favor. The feeling you get, aside from extreme pains all over, difficulty of breathing and as if all life is being sucked from your body ! They will be putting cutdown lines and central tubes on me anytime soon ! If they intubate me and place me on ventilator, then the game is almost over ! If Ateng (referring to his wife) survives, then my wish for her and Raymond (his son who is with autism) for a long and happy life will bear fruition ! Raymond however needs financial and emotional care for the rest of his life ! Something I may no longer be able to fulfill! It Is my fervent hope that all of you may assist the rest of my Family in our most difficult times!”
I immediately felt from Dr. Greg’s text message that the greater pain he was suffering was the thought that, if he and his wife do not survive this virus, nobody might look after their son. But what gave me greater pain as a bishop was that part in the message of the family’s friend that said, “Dr. Macasaet wants to receive the last rites but doctors won’t allow anyone go near him. The family requests for words of encouragement, Bishop. Thank you po.” Then he gave me the cell phone number of Dr. Greg.
I immediately tried dialing Dr. Greg’s phone, to no avail. Soon, the friend sent a follow up message saying that Dr. Greg could not reply to his cell phone anymore because he had to be intubated already. But he gave me the cell phone number of Dr. Greg’s wife, Dr. Evalyn, also an anesthesiologist. Apparently, she had been isolated in another room because she was also infected but continued to monitor her husband by communicating with the doctors through her cell phone. I was able to get Dr. Eva on the line.

She spoke like a regular doctor when I asked how her husband was doing, using medical terms I did not quite understand. She spoke the same way when I asked how she herself was doing. She managed to get me to understand that the extent of the infection on her was at least not as serious yet as with her husband. When I said, “Would you like me to bless the two of you? I understand that even priests are not allowed in the ICU... I can give you a pray-over right now over the telephone.” Without waiting for me to finish my sentence, she answered, “Yes, yes, please do that, Father.” She was silent as I prayed over her and her husband. And she said a loud “Amen” when I concluded with a blessing. But I could sense that she was disoriented. She just kept saying “Thank you, thank you, please continue to pray for him.”

Dr. Greg died this morning at 4:00am. He was the second casualty among our frontliners. Just a day before Dr. Greg was intubated I read on FB the requests for prayers for the eternal repose of a young and promising cardiologist, Dr. Israel Bactol MD. Dr. Bactol also got exposed to an infected patient and quickly developed the same symptoms, was eventually intubated and... died. He was just 34 years old.
After I read the prayer request for Dr. Bactol, I had the idea of typing in the search engine of FB “frontliner doctors infected with COVID19”. The search led me to several posts, giving me a fuller list of frontliner doctors who have also been infected by COVID19, and for whom urgent requests for prayer are being passed around by their fellow frontliners.
Aside from Dr. Bactol and Dr. Macasaet, there were ten others in the list—names of very well known doctors, who are presently putting their own lives on the line as frontliners in the fight against COVID19: Dr. Raul Jara, also cardiologist, who is now intubated and hooked to ventilator, Dr. Sally Gatchalian, President of PPS (I googled the acronym and found out that it means Philippine Pediatricians’ Society), Dr. Francis Dimalanta, pediatrician, Dr. Marie Valbuena, with progressing pneumonia and now intubated in the ICU, Dr. Kiko Lukban, Dr. Tess Castro, Dr. Relito Saquilayan who was also COVID positive but happily now improving, Dr. Gerard Goco, specialized in Nuclear Medicine, also presently intubated, the well known Dr. Ayuyao, pulmonologist, who is being prepared for intubation, and of course, Dr. Greg’s own wife, Dr. Evalyn, who, along with her son Raymond, are now grieving the untimely demise of Dr. Greg.
In more normal times, doctors are usually more discreet about disclosing the medical conditions of people, considering data privacy and all that. But we are not living in normal times. You could sense panic in the desperate plea of doctors for prayers, for spiritual and moral support. You could sense that they themselves are afraid for their own families that they could also get infected and not survive this nightmare.

There is another thing that they are not saying and I wish to say it myself, “Could it be that our own doctors and nurses and other health workers in the frontline are not adequately protected from infection?” We see online what sort of protective gears doctors and nurses are made to wear in China, in Italy, in the United States. I wonder if our doctors even have decent accommodations while attending to their patients and are unable to come home because of the lockdown, or because they are afraid to infect their own family members. If even our best doctors in well-equipped private hospitals are vulnerable, I wonder what it is like in the public hospitals.
Whoever you are, if you are reading this at this very moment, would you kindly join our invisible web of prayer warriors who are at the frontline of another aspect of this fight against the COVID19–namely, the spiritual battle? No matter if you’re Muslim, or Buddhist, or Catholic, or Protestant... can you please join in praying fervently that God protect our frontliners who put their lives on the line to protect us from this devastating plague?”
Don't worry. This ghost is not scary at all. In fact, when I saw it in the photo that I took, I thought of what Philippines like in the past.

10 April 2009. Good Friday. Around 3:00 PM.

I just came from a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by a friend at St John Bosco Parish Church in Makati. My friend, who was just ordained a priest at the Church of Gesu in Ateneo de Manila University six days ago, had chosen to celebrate his first Mass at Don Bosco in Makati. After the event, I decided to walk home instead of taking a ride.

Like A Ghost Town

The Ayala business district in Makati is a very busy city. However, during Lent, the business district is like a ghost town. And this is what I like so I could take snapshots of Makati when it is almost empty — quiet and peaceful, almost no people in the streets, no honking cars and public buses and jeepneys that block your way.

That day, Good Friday, was one of those beautiful days.

The Ayala Underpass

This is the Ayala underground walkway near Makati and Ayala Avenues intersection. It crosses the Ayala Avenue. Inside, it is a good subject to show perspectives.

As I ambled the underground walkway that day, I was the only one there and I thought it was a good opportunity to take a photo of it empty; ie while there were no pedestrians. I turned my camera on, pressed it on my tummy, then clicked. Viewed the photo afterwards, I thought it was just okay. Then, I continued strolling the streets of Makati while it was peaceful and quiet.

That time, I was just learning how to take pictures with a digital camera. Simply reading tips from professional photographers on the Web, one tip was to have a keen eye on perspective. I thought that the underpass was a good subject for a perspective shot.

The Empty Passage and the Black Woman

Back home, I immediately uploaded to my laptop all the photos I took on that day. Viewing the photos one by one, I was disappointed to see the Ayala underpass snapshot blurry. I remembered that I didn't pause when I took the picture. I took it while walking; or maybe, I forgot to change my settings.

While looking at the photo, something I noticed that shouldn't be there – a figure of a person. So, I zoomed in the photo to examine it further. The figure was that of woman as if peeking from a corner of a wall.

She was a black woman wearing a head wrap, perhaps African or Jamaican, wearing custom clothes common in Africa. If you're familiar with the Mexican soap Marimar, there was a character there named Corazon. How she was costumed in that soap is similar to the woman in the photo that I took. (Google Marimar Corazon to get an idea.)

If you are going to examine the photo, the underpass was empty. It really was when I took this photo. I wanted it empty because it's the reason why I took a snapshot. I didn't want people in the photo. I was more interested in the structure of the underground passage.

Zoom It In To See The Ghost

The photo is blurry so I uploaded the photo in its original state and size so that when you zoom in the section where the ghost is, you can figure out what it looks like. Don't worry. This is one ghost that is not scary at all.

Zoom in the photo and pan to the left. There you will see which I believe is a ghost.

The Strange Thing About The Woman

Imagine yourself peeking behind a corner of a wall avoiding to be seen. You will be slightly bending forward, partly hidden behind the wall while your face is a little bit exposed so that your eyes could peek through the open space. The strange thing about the ghost was that, she was peeking through a solid wall instead of behind the wall. If she was peeking behind the wall, I would have taken a shot of her back. But it is not the case in this photo. She was peeking through a solid wall while her body was in the open.

A Strange Thing Happened While Blogging This

Here's another strange thing. I mentioned that what I saw in the photo was a black woman somewhat in her 50s.

When I examined this photo back in 2009, what I saw was a black woman, perhaps African because of the type of dress she was wearing. I still remember the colour of her head wrap; it was blue with white print, perhaps floral. Her blouse was tucked in under her skirt, which almost touched her ankles. The black woman was overweight, perhaps in her 50s. In fact, back then, I was thinking that the Spaniards brought with them African slaves; and it is for that reason, why a ghost like of an African woman could be picture taken such as in my photo.

But here's what gave me goosebumps when I was blogging this.

For the purpose of this blog, I cropped the section of my photo where the ghost can be seen so I could present it well to you. To my surprise, the black woman was not there. Instead, it is a woman that you see in the photo now, perhaps Filipino, dressed in the 40s or perhaps 50s.

Believe it or not!

If Globe broadband may have hijacked your browser recently, and has been annoying you each time you open your browser, here's a way to stop this malicious malware from pestering your online quality time.

Reset Your Browser

Resetting your browser means setting it to its original clean state. It's like having a just installed browser. For Chrome, you go to settings and click Advanced Settings. Down below you will find the Reset command. For Firefox, from the menu click the help icon (?), choose Troubleshooting Information, then click the Refresh Firefox button.

For other browsers, the reset function does the same thing. It simply varies with the terms used by the browser.

What is this Globe BroadBandStatus2 Malware?

The malicious URL, which is broadbandstatus2 dot globe dot com dot ph slash fup (warning: do not visit the site), shows your broadband data usage for the month. If your usage is almost up to the maximum limit, it reminds you that your Internet speed connection will start to slow down. So, it will ask you to upgrade to a higher maximum data usage, for a fee, of course. If you simply close the window-tab, it will show up again once you open a new window or tab. If you try to do a Google search, clicking any of the search results will direct you to the same malicious Globe broadband URL. In short, you won't be able to visit any web site.

In order to temporarily stop this malicious adware, there's a link in the upper right corner that you have to click in order that you can continue browsing the Net. Once you have done that, the annoying Globe broadband ad will stop showing up again, at least, for your current session. Meaning, the next time you open your browser, the malicious adware is there to pester your day. This repetitive task will annoy you for the rest of your life unless you stop it.

This type of malicious adware is called a "hijacker". What it does is that it hijacks your default home page and replace it with the malicious URL. For example, if you have set your default home page to a particular site that shows the current stock market or your calendar that shows your appointments and business meetings, your favorite home page will never show up again automatically.

Blocking The Site Is Not The Solution

You might think of an ad or site blocker as a solution such as block site or block URL extension or plugin for your browser. Yes, the blocker will be able to block the malicious web page from showing up but the annoying effect is just the same because what keeps on showing up instead on your browser is the blocker's message that it has stopped the globe broadband URL. As a result, you won't be able to browse the Internet either.

Legal Hijacker Versus Illegal Hijacker

Hijacking becomes ethical and legal if it has the permission of the user. Meaning, the owner of the script or app must first ask the user's permission if it will allow it to take over your browser's home page. For example, a wallpaper app or theme app that shows a new photo each time you open your browser. Another app would direct you to a customised web search. These apps are something you can install as your browser's extension or plugin which you disable or delete anytime. Without your permission, the app must not interfere with your browsing experience.
So, one way to stop a malicious adware from hijacking your browser is by installing a legal "hijacker" – an extension, plugin, or app that takes over your home page legally, ethically and with your permission.

Who Owns the Hijacking URL

First, I thought, that a hacker was maliciously using Globe Telecoms to the advantage of the hacker. So, I simply notified Globe via its Twitter that there was such a hacker. The second time my browser was hijacked, I was so pissed that I had to investigate. First, I wanted to find out who actually owned the domain globe.com.ph. Using the whois service of dot.ph, I was surprised to find out that globe.com.ph is owned by Globe Telecoms. If Globe Telecoms owned globe.com.ph, it also own any subdomain of globe.com.ph such as broadbandstatus2.globe.com.ph.

So, when I found out that the hijacking URL is owned by Globe Telecoms itself, I complained via Globe's Twitter.

The Browser Highjacker Attacked the Third Time

For the third time, the highjacking URL attacked my browser once again. One thing I noticed, there was already an escape button. The button Continue browsing allowed you to escape from the loop. This means, when they launched this malicious URL, Globe's technical people didn't test it. They didn't know that their script was looping, which means, there was no way to exit from the script until I complained about it. That only proves, that the hijacking URL was not from a malicious hacker, but from Globe Telecoms itself.
Given the benefit of the doubt, that the hijacking URL was not Globe's, why then they had not done anything to secure their servers? Didn't they know that their server was hacked, and that the hacker put a malicious script inside their server? Or, perhaps, an insider deliberately put it inside to Globe's detriment? Beats me!

Globe Broadband Malware Attacked the Fourth Time

I don't have an account with Globe Telecoms. I'm not a subscriber. I merely connect to the Internet via WiFi. Yet, I suffer the malicious intent of the hijacking script. If I were a neighbour, I would see my neighbour's WiFi details. There goes my neighbour's privacy open to whoever connects to his WiFi.
I have shifted from desktop to laptop to Mac, thinking that I would be leaving the malicious script to my old computers. Yet, with a Mac, the malicious URL continues to attack which just proves that the script was coming from a malicious website.
I have complained about this via Globe Telecom's Twitter account, Facebook page, and it's own forum, even mentioning @JAZA. It has been too much, I had to bring it to the National Privacy Commission.

I am chronicling the events and activities related to the super typhoon Yolanda on The Yolanda Chronicles. While gathering information for the first anniversary of the super typhoon, I stumbled upon a sentiment expressed by an Italian-American for the Filipinos.

This Italian-American speaker from New York was invited by a Filipino-American organization, also in New York, to speak before them, most likely, about a topic related to the theme of the event, which was Filipino-American civic association in Staten, NY. In the middle of his talk, the president of the organization stopped him. Embarrassed, the speaker left the event.

Below is the speaker's sentiment verbatim which he wrote in the comments section of a news story related to his speech, which was about Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the Filipinos. If not deleted yet, you may find the comment here.

This is all a waste of time.

Last Saturday, I addressed a large group of Filipinos entitled "the Filipino-American Civic Association on Staten Island, NY. This group is mainly made up of prominent Filipino professionals. Doctors, Lawyers, etc. I started my speech with some American-Filipino History, dating back to World War II and how we fought together against the Japanese.

I reminded the group that the US government did not properly include them as with many veteran entitlements as promised. I further discussed the present Immigration problem as the Philippines is one of 4 countries in the world that are given the least access to US Visas, Green Cards and citizenship. I told them, it's a form of discrimination and should be given first priority due to the fact that we were always great allies, Filipinos always shown allegiance to the US. They are still a big presence in our Navy. Many are educated and skilled in health fields. They Speak English. They have a fantastic work ethic. Ninety-nine % are Catholic/Christian. Very low criminal history. Not only will they not be a burden to the US, but will [also be] a great asset.
I said all that to tie in my next and final issue: TPS.

At this moment, the president of the organization interrupted me and said, "This speech of yours has nothing to do with this organization and we have no interested [sic] in these topics, but thank you for coming". I was speechless, I felt my face turn red. I just packed up my notes and left. I quickly realized that if their own countryman are not interested, what chance will they have with the US Government.

Please note: I am not Filipino. I am an Italian American born in NYC.

Most men know the simplest one — the four-in-hand knot, which can look lousy if the material is not right. If your necktie is short and its fabric is thick, use the four-in-hand knot. Otherwise, use the half Windsor knot. If the length of your necktie is too long for your body or its fabric is too thin to form an elegant knot, use the Full Windsor knot.

For some men, it is easier to tie a Windsor knot while the necktie is around their neck. What if somebody asked you to prepare his necktie with a half Windsor knot but does not want to wear it yet?

This video shows the trick. It takes practice to perfect it. Remember that the half Windsor knot is like a double four-in-hand knot. So make sure that the necktie is coiled twice around the narrower width. Also, while pulling the necktie to its perfect form, make sure that the back of the knot shows 3 perfect cone shapes – left, right, and middle.

How would you know if you made a perfect Windsor knot?
To untie your Windsor tie, pull the narrower width of your necktie from the knot. If you leave a single knot after the pull, then, you failed to tie a Windsor knot.tonyfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03683761519009129109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401919218067431046.post-36479863154627856312014-09-11T22:10:00.001+08:002014-09-11T22:10:31.390+08:00Cool Gadget: Samsung Gear Stonyfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03683761519009129109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401919218067431046.post-31246949787219370782014-09-09T19:05:00.000+08:002014-09-09T19:10:37.925+08:00Twitter Goes Commercial Other Than Social Soon

Currently being tested in U.S., Twitter will soon allow you to buy merchandise via popular Twitter accounts. This addon feature would not, however, rob you from enjoying Twitter the way you enjoy it today. Due to this commercial feature, the Privacy Policy of Twitter would be amended to include new sections related to your purchasing info. For the reason that your Twitter would now include your buying info, like credit card information, Twitter had to make stricter measures and procedures to protect your account, prevent spam, fraud, and abuse. In the future, Twitter also plans to include special offers that you can redeem at select stores.

I don't blame Twitter for planning to make Twitter commercial other than social. Facebook has ventured into that since 2007. We've been enjoying Twitter's free services since 2006; and I wondered how Twitter was earning for giving those SMS-like services for free. After 8 years, I believe Twitter has the right to enjoy return on its investments.
Can One Really Make Money Online?

The answer is Yes, theoretically and technically! It is possible. However, a big HOWEVER, your success rate depends on a plenty of factors that successful online marketers would not tell you completely. I know. I've been there and until now I have not earned a single cent. (Update. I earned $9.95 three times in 9 years. Nice numbers. Go ahead, play them in a lottery. :-)

Traffic (not in the streets)

The right system (this is actually complicated)

The right mentors (they are expensive)

The right products (needs extensive research)

The right niche (that's hard to target)

Geographic location (good if you're in US, New Zealand, Australia, UK and other prime cities.)

Good site content (this is serious; don't play with content)

Time (it requires work like a full time job)

Strategies (sorry, these are the masters' secrets)

MONEY. (you need cash to earn cash)

I classify MMO (short for make money online) business into three levels.

The hard and long way

The expensive fast track

The budget-friendly shortcut

To give you an idea what's the hard and long (no, not the Kris Kringle something theme) way, visit this blog. It teaches you where to start from.

There is a fast track, though, but it requires a big investment. If you have the money, go ahead. You can start here. You have two options here: your way or the other way. In your way, you can study their methods by watching the video tutorials. You can enjoy these videos, I think, for a year. The tutorials are straight-forward and have good content. The tutorials are free and you don't have to buy anything (but you might have to if you wish to continue your membership). The other way is the fast track to MMO but it is expensive.

The budget-friendly shortcut requires little investment but it cuts short the long method that you have to go through if you were just starting in the MMO business. If you want to jump start, hop in here. This is actually more like a technique or strategy.

My suggestion

Read first the blog that I recommended here. This is to give you an idea that to make money on line is not easy.

Study the video tutorials. This is to give you an idea how the successful money online entrepreneurs do it. There are many methods on how to make money online but these tutorials would already give you enough knowledge about this Internet marketing business.

Then, go for the budget-friendly shortcut. This site also offers an option to a fast track method.

Lastly, once you have earned more than enough, then go for the expensive fast track.

Try it.

No need to queue in a long line before a counter. And, yes you can already avoid those nasty, often rude, city or municipal employees who, if they had their way, would rather receive their paychecks "trabojo en absencia." If you've heard of "working from home", this is new — earn a paycheck by "not working from home or office." Anyway, this is not about the [some] corrupt government employees. Sorry to say that but I yet have to encounter a government employee who is full of kindness, if such exists.

Going back.

The NSO virtual office is open 24/7. You pay using your VISA or Mastercard, Bancnet ATM, or Globe GCash. Once you have ordered your NSO certified birth certificate, you can check the status of your application, also online. Once ready, the certificates will be delivered to you.

These are the NSO certificates that you can request online.
Here's the link to NSO online or NSO Help Line: https://nsohelpline.com/. See that "s" after http? It means "secure".

It's website is simple and direct to the point, which is good. How efficient is the online procedure? That I do not know yet.

Let me add just one short story.

I went to the city hall in Makati. I requested a copy of our land title. I went to the cashier and paid the fees.
The cashier raised her voice and these were the words that the nasty fat lady threw at me: "Wala akong panukli!#?" (Translated: I don't have change!#?)

By simply handing a paper and a bill to her, without me uttering any word, I don't think I deserved such an attitude.
I meekly obliged to her impolite command, and in a cultured manner addressed her, "You could have said it politely."tonyfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03683761519009129109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401919218067431046.post-44741293200326487632014-02-21T02:54:00.000+08:002014-08-29T00:45:25.335+08:00The Good Thing About RCBC Bankard

RCBC Bankard has a new feature that benefits each cardholder. Each time you use your credit card online, just a few seconds after, you are going to receive a alert message to your mobile phone saying your card xxxx-xxxx just made an online transaction in the amount of Pxxx. If you didn't do this transaction, you are advised to call its hotline immediately.
So far, Bankard's customer support persons who have called me up reminding me of my payments are friendly and considerate. On the contrary, some other credit card companies still use the old tactics of harassment and malicious stories.
Good job, Bankard! Please maintain it that way.

Without spending much money, you can bring your children at these places in Metro Manila to enjoy music, lights, and colors. Whether you spend big or not, your children will be just as happy.

Ayala Triangle Gardens Lights and Sounds Show

It started in Christmas 2010. Set in a garden, the lights dance with the rhythm of a medley of Christmas music. The show lasts only 5 minutes. It starts at 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Show is every 30 minutes. Each show is not like the next one. The show runs from Nov 16 to Dec 30. The show is held just behind the Philippine Stock Exchange. After the show, you can dine at the row of restaurants within the park. Ayala Triangle is located within the corners of Ayala Avenue, Paseo de Roxas, and Makati Ave in Makati City. It was the old Ugarte Field. Even older than that, it was called the Nielson Field -- an airport. Yes, there was a Makati airport -- the Manila International Air Terminal. It was the first modern and commercial airport in the Philippines. You can still see the Nielson Tower, now Filipinas Heritage Library, standing in the old field.

The cyber crime law indeed megamorphed a scare on the Net. Filipino netizens all of sudden stopped clicking, liking, sharing, and tweeting.

I'm not against the cyber crime law but it sure froze my mouse from clicking it. Probably that's the reason why many groups and individuals are shouting out their disapproval. The freedom of expression suddenly went six feet under.

I agree, though, that cyber bullying, whether you call that libel or otherwise, should be a crime that is punishable by law. I don't care if the sentence is 1 year, 2 years, or 10 years of imprisonment.
The punishment should scare the hell out of the bully so that they would behave like good
netizens. After all, the majority good netizens do not want them around on the Net. These bullies and "pasaway" on the Net are incorrigible, low-self-esteemed pain in the ash.

What scares me, and perhaps, other concerned citizens as well, is that what if a politician or a government official was doing something under his nose with blood money under the table? Can
you not expose to the public his anomalous activity? If the government sided with this corrupt
official in one hammer of a gavel, who else can you turn to? Doesn't it look like the cyber crime law was written to protect the lawmakers themselves from being criticized or exposed?

Let's example a scenario. I want to make this clear. What follows is only an example.

A writer wrote an article to expose a politician who used his pork barrel to purchase a beach
resort. A concerned netizen, who is connected to thousands of netizens, stumbled upon his
article and shared this to the social media grid. His thousand connections took the time to read the article, tweeted it, liked it, and shared it. The article turned viral on the Net that TV networks broadcast the digital epidemia on news programs. Consequently, it caught the politician's attention.

The politician denied what was written about him. Another higher-authority politician backed him up and witnessed in favor of him even if they both knew that the article was true and factual. To cut the story short, the writer was brought to court together with the thousands of netizens who shared the article, the web host provider and site owners included.

If you are going to ask the honorable blindfolded justice, who's side are you in: the lawmaker-lawbreaker politician or the concerned citizens?

There is a variety of reasons why netizens like, tweet, or share a post or an article.

They are a fan of the author.

They like the content of the article.

They like how the article was written.

They share the same advocacy with the author.

They quote part of the story and give due credit to the site and author.

Technically, they provide a back link to make a reference to an item that they did not author.

They like or abhor the politician's activity.

Can the cyber crime law distinguish these reasons? Is it just to be punished for liking an article
due to how it was creatively written?

This like button, especially the like - unlike button, seen in YouTube, is tricky. For example, if the video exposes an anomalous activity, which are you liking or un-liking: the video itself or the anomalous activity? A newbie or low-grade techie can get confused on how to use the button.

I wonder if the lawmakers are regular social media users. I think they have to understand how it works digitally in the social media cloud.

I hope there's nothing libelous about what I wrote. In the meantime, to keep you out of trouble "think before you click" (credits GMA multimedia news campaign), don't name names, limit your opinions to positive criticisms, and avoid arguments.

If you were bullied one time or fell victim to an identity theft, you'd be thankful there is cyber crime law. On the contrary, if you fell victim behind bars for sharing a good advocacy like the "anti-epal campaign", the cyber crime law becomes your nightmare on elm street. With that alone, you know that there's a loophole somewhere in the law.

A beautiful documentary that subliminally projects an irony of life.

"Minsan Sa Isang Taon" (Once A Year), an I-Witness documentary (aired Oct 8, 2012, GMA Network) by Kara David, may look like a simple documentary but it's actually not. Its depth has significant meanings to convey.

Minsan Sa Isang Taon is about an abaca farmer who earns only a thousand pesos once a year from selling abaca fibers. It takes three abaca trees to produce a kilo of abaca fibers. It takes a year to accumulate 20 to 30 kilos of abaca fibers. If the farmer could harvest 25 kilos of abaca fibers a year, he would earn one thousand pesos at ₱40/kg. Little that the farmer knew that the few 100 bills that he had earned the whole year were made of abaca fiber.

The Philippine money must be special considering what it is made of. Sad to say, money is a symbol of wealth enjoyed by a few. What is ironic is that the abaca that the Philippine money is made of mirrors Filipino poverty.

Hard work is the key to success, so they say. That is hardly believable in the case of the abaca farmer's year-round one-thousand-peso worth hard labour. Somewhere in that hard-work-success adage, something must be missing.

The abaca farmer is surrounded with gifts of nature - hills, trees, unpolluted air. He must be rich. Unfortunately, he and his family gets to taste rice only once a year. If luckier, meat for his kids.

Actually, the abaca farmer is surrounded by abundance. He only needs to cultivate bright ideas. If only given the proper education and assistance, he doesn't have to wait a year in order to earn a thousand pesos.

A historic site like Fort Drum in El Fraile island could have been a priceless tourist spot if only taken care of. Built in 1909 through 1916, Fort Drum is a concrete battleship built by the United States Army.
