All Saints Day - A Tradition That Evolved to Family Reunions

All Saints Day, commemorated every November 1, is an old Filipino tradition, not only by Catholic Christians but by almost every Filipino. It's a national holiday in the Philippines. Filipinos flock the cemetery to visit the memorial grave of their loved ones. If there are relatives that they don't usually see on Christmas, they would probably see them on All Saints Day. More than visiting the departed ones, this tradition has evolved into family reunions - festive but without the glamor of Christmas and expensive venues. A decade ago, this tradition has become a nasty tradition because the cemetery, instead of being a sacred place, had become a venue for parties, getting high on drugs and alcohol, karaoke, and mahjong, and other types of gambling. Thanks to the church and the government, the Filipinos have become more behaved. Alcoholic beverages, TVs, karaoke, pointed objects and gambling are now prohibited to brought inside the cemetery. More than visiting a cemetery, some F...

Poverty Is A Choice

Believe it or not, you can choose to be poor! Years ago, I was jobless for months. My savings were dropping. I did some volunteer jobs, only walking to and from the office every day to save the little money I had for the day. At lunch, I would eat only two pieces of banana. Depressed, I asked God why I was experiencing poverty. Was that His way of favoring me? But, what is poverty anyway? Pointing at the beggars on the sidewalk of Makati Avenue, I asked, "Is that poverty?" I had no answer but there's only one way to find out. Be one of them. Leaving all things behind except for the clothes I was wearing and a few bucks, I left home and spent the night in a park together with all sorts of homeless people. I couldn't sleep the way the homeless could. I had fear in my mind that someone might just strip me naked and steal everything I had, or find myself in the morning with a knife on my chest. Thinking that my life was already a throw-away, I went to places where men cru...

Corruption = Poverty

In a country like the Philippines, where corruption is a cancer in stage seven times seven times seven, poverty in a Filipino society has become chronic and acute, infecting the lives of Filipino people, especially the children, who should have been in school studying rather than out in the streets scavenging and forced to labor. The children suffer the worst in poverty; and you can only blame that to the selfish, immature, and irresponsible adults who have a mindset of a crocodile. If I were to produce a movie about the corruption in the public and private sections of the society, "The Crocodiles" would be an appropriate title. My apologies to the animal welfare organizations if I had to compare your well-loved crocodiles to corrupt public servants and private capitalists. If this should stir a controversy, then I should stick to "The Mosquitoes". Upon seeing the financial potential of real estate properties along the banks of Pasig River in Makati due to the ris...

Most Googled Word

I was not surprised that the most Googled word was SEX. That would be easy to guess. Does that mean that more people are thinking about sex than money? Well, there's nothing wrong about sex. It is just misunderstood especially in countries where people look at it as a "bad" or forbidden thing. Maybe, that explains why Egypt, India and Turkey are the world's top user of the keyword "sex". For people where sex is forbidden in their homes or society, the Internet has become the window to their freedom to explore the forbidden hot stuff in the privacy of their rooms. For them the Internet is a gift. Good news or bad news? Good for them if they will look at the "it" word in a positive context. Bad, if it will result to a vicious act. The Internet may be a source of both good and bad materials regarding the subject. To determine which pages are good or bad is a complicated thing. I'll leave that to your own judgment. As of this writing, there are abo...
